glitch4

Glitch 4 is the long awaited successor to the popular Glitch 3 Rack for Ableton Live. Built for Ableton Live 8 these Racks make use of some of Live 8’s new Effects Devices and features such as Vocoder, Overdrive, Frequency Shifter, Corpus and the new delay modes found in all existing delays. The pack includes two Glitch Racks, each loaded with eight different effects. By automating the Racks Macro Knobs, intricate, evolving “glitch” type sounds can be created from even the most boring loops. Of course you can use the Racks without automation as multi-effects processing Racks.

The download is in “Ableton Live Pack” or “.alp” format (once un-zipped) and includes a demo Live Set to give you a few examples of how the Racks can be used.

Live Auto Sampler Template (os x)

The “AutoSampler” is a very handy environment template designed to automate the process of sampling hardware gear. It comes with a full instruction set to explain how it works. Go to View –> Lessons inside the Live interface to find the instructions.

If you’ve ever taken on the tedious task of multi sampling hardware synthesizers and drum machines then you will know how nice it will be to automate that entire process. After a little setup you’ll be able to hit the spacebar and sit back while Live records perfect length, pre-chopped samples of your entire synth patch. No more chopping down long recordings into individual samples, this template records one perfect length clip per note, at an octave range you specify. You can also select how many notes per octave you’d like to sample and at what velocity you’d like to sample them… all with just a few quick tweaks.

Why spend hundreds of dollars on other software designed to do this, such as “Sample Robot”… if you own Live then this template is all you need to turn Live into an automated sampling workstation.

Been dreaming of using some those analog sounds from that synth you’ve got sitting there collecting dirt? Can’t be bothered spending days sampling every note one by one? Then you’ll love this!

This template makes use of the IACbus on mac OS X and requires a little setup outside of Live, therefor I’m unsure of the functionality in Windows. However with a little modification I’m sure it can be adapted to windows using MidiYoke or equivalent.

The Grooves download is an assortment of groove templates for Ableton Live 8. Inside you’ll find two folders, one is all the default grooves from Logic 8 and the other is various grooves recorded from the Elektron Machinedrum SPS-1uw. The built-in Logic grooves are something I personally have missed dearly since moving 100% to Live… but not anymore thanks to Live 8. While in the process of capturing the Logic grooves I thought it would be nice to also record some grooves from the SPS-1uw Machinedrum. So here it is the first of the groove templates from DefEQ… Grooves!

oSSLator Waveforms Sample Pack for Ableton Live Sampler’s

This sample pack was compiled using sounds created by the SSL 4000G large format analog mixing console. Let me clarify a bit… all sounds were created by the SSL 4000G console itself, NOT sounds being recorded through the console.

HOW? By feeding channel modules back into themselves then compressing the channel strip its possible to control the feedback. The result is a nice clean sine wave oscillator. By filtering the feedback with the onboard high and low pass filters and EQ its possible to shape the feedback into other waveshapes, as well as pitch the oscillator. Feed the output into adjacent modules setup the same way and you have yourself one massive 100% pure analog frequency modulation synthesizer. For this exploration I was only using 16 channel all cross modulated into each other in various ways, but the desk is 56 channels so there is more experimentation to be done.

I instantly thought while experimenting with this how great it would be to use snippets of these sounds like individual oscillators played back in Simpler or Sampler; exactly like the waveforms pack does. So In the spirit of the waveforms project I’ve started with Hendrik from Opuswerk here are a hand full of oSSLators I’ve created using these sounds captured from the SSL 4000G console. I’ve also included the raw recordings so you can have a listen to what they sounded like raw and also chop your own oSSLators and samples from them. After unpacking the Ableton Live Pack, you’ll find the raw files here: /oSSLator Project/Samples/Defeq/oSSLator/oSSLator Raw

If you make some cool instruments with this pack and would like to share them with the community let us know and we’ll post them here for everyone to enjoy.

Analog Waveform Sampling Project by 3OT and opuswerk

waveforms

This project was reborn as Hendrik of opuswerk and 3OT met on the Internet, both looking for single waveforms that they could load into Ableton’s simpler as oscillators… 2 years after one another. The project was dug from the depths of the Ableton forum and brought to life in an effort to make usable tools available to ourselves and to other like minded musicians.

WHAT IS WAVEFORMS?
The pack contains several waveforms all sampled from analog synthesizers (there are a few exceptions like the Elektron SFX-6). All waveforms have been edited, looped and appropriately mapped, then made available in Ableton Live’s Simpler format as this is what we use, but these could easily be converted to Sampler format as well. We’ve also included a folder with just the samples for those of you not using Ableton. In this case you’ll have to load them in your favorite sampler and make the necessary adjustments and loops yourself.

The instruments we’ve created using these waveforms aren’t aiming to be a recreation of analog synth nor an specific emulation of any kind. They are simply tools for the creative musician. You won’t find any “presets” in the pack. Just great raw waveforms who are begging to be mangled and manipulated in countless ways.

OK… I’ve finally had a chance to dig into this thing a little and I’ve really only got a few simple words to say about it.

WOW! For this synth to be free is kinda… well… insane. I’ve paid good money for synths that are half as good as Automat. This synth is quickly becoming my ‘go to’ synth for nearly any sound imaginable. If you don’t have it already… what the hell are you waiting for?

Japanese Speak n Spell Ableton Live Set

japanese_speak

This is a little Ableton set I created to help myself learn Japanese (Hiragana characters). I jacked this little speak n spell off some poor kid (my step daughter) sampled it and loaded the samples into Ableton Live. The layout of the original kids toy reminded me of Lives session view so I duplicated it as close as I could in Live. I suppose you really could use this to learn Hiragana, but I figure most of you would just hack up those lofi samples and make some tracks with em.

The Japanese characters used on the Clip names will only show up as “?” marks if you don’t have the Japanese version of Live. Just go to the Ableton website and download the Japanese version… everything is still in English but Japanese characters are supported. Make sure you copy over your English manual if you do get rid of your old version.

I’d be very curious to see  and hear what people end up doing with this. It would be cool if some Japanese speaking users could sample real human voices for each character, both male and female. Then it possibly could be a useful tool for learning Hiragana.

Frequency Specific Reverb (or any FX)

0
Filed under Effects, Tips n Tricks
Tagged as , , , ,

In Ableton (well most software for that matter) its pretty easy to accomplish frequency dependant/specific fx. I’ve included a Live Set that demonstrates this trick. I won’t go into crazy detail on how it works… I’ll leave that up to you to have a look at the Set and decode it for yourself, its pretty simple really.

Why would you want to do this? Here is the simple rundown. Say you have a vocal track and would like to add a ‘long bright’ reverb to just the sibilant sounds and a ‘dark short’ reverb the the rest of the vocal. Or maybe you have a drum loop which would sound nice with a similar treatment, bright reverb on the hats and snare and dark soft reverb for the kick and toms. The idea is very simple… place an EQ pre whichever effect you decide on in your return tracks and those effects only respond to those frequencies, easy right. Some of Lives devices have this type of feature already built in – for example the Reverb – but using an EQ Eight offers a lot more control over which frequencies make it through. The trick is getting the frequency specific effects (in my example reverb) to interact with the none frequency specific effects so they ’solidify’ more as one effect. In my example set I’ve used a compressor over the “Normal Verb” return with its sidechain input set to receive the “FreqSpec Verb” signal. This “ducks” the “Normal Verb” when ever the “FreqSpec Verb” is triggered.

Simple yet effective.. hope you like.

Have any thoughts or would like to contribute to this idea? We’d love to hear em!

Elektron MachineDrum SPS-1uw Instrument Racks + Sample Pack

machdrum

Over 90mb worth of samples from the Elektron MachineDrum SPS-1uw (some are high quality 24bit 96k and some not). Three racks included, inspired by the original Elektron Machine Drum SPS-1. I did say INSPIRED BY… they are not designed to “perfectly” emulate the SPS-1, so please don’t expect this to be the miracle FREE version of the real thing. However you can expect them fun and useful tools with lots of sonic potential.

Why 3 versions and what is what?

  • “v1″ is the first generation, light on CPU, practical and useful.
  • “v2″ second generation, much more tweakability + FX routings (closer in concept to the real SPS-1) but not so light on CPU.
  • “v3″ third generation, this one is pretty much exactly like “v1″ with a slightly different configuration to allow for more macro knobs. Still light on CPU.

I’ve only made these 3, each with just 16 samples in them like the real SPS-1. There is a folder in the .zip file named “MachineDrum SPS-1uw Samples” so its up to you to find this folder, replace the samples in the rack

and start building your own SPS-1 drum kits. I’m interested to hear the kits everyone comes up with. So please share back if you’ve created anything with them.

Enjoy!
